My body decided to make tonight both eventful and expensive. :(
Around 9:45 last night I began nursing David. He's been a champ for a while now so it was no surprise when he finished around 10:10 and had already started falling back to sleep. I decided to change his diaper before he fell into too deep of sleep and got mad for mommy waking him up. Plus, I wanted to get him into pj's for the rest of the night to be "out". I put him on the changing table on the pack-n-play, unsnapped the bottom of the onesie and proceeded to change his diaper. When I heard him coo and giggle I looked up at him to see red streaked from his mouth, and blood on his collar.
Still smiling and cooing I ran to turn the lights on to their highest wattage and check him out. I couldn't see blood in his mouth. I swiped the inside of his mouth, gums, lips, etc and no blood on my finger. I thought maybe he cut the inside of his mouth. I began freaking and I couldn't find where it was coming from. I sat him up to investigate. Still really couldn't see in his mouth. So I picked him up so his face was at mine. Still didn't see anything. He spit up on my shoulder, no biggie I thought and looked. There was a lot of blood on my shoulder and coming from his mouth. Still looking as though he was content I freaked out even more. I put him back down and by now Mike was really moving.
I went to the laptop to look for the BCBS advice nurse phone #'s and had to log in. UGH ... my log in still is locked from the last time I tried!!! Mike had picked up him and as I was grabbing my wallet to do a password reset he spit up more blood on Mike. I looked at Mike and said that's it, we're going to the ER. We realized that with him still in his normal sunny disposition that it was more likely ME that had something wrong than him but we weren't taking any chances. Even if it was me that was bleeding, it couldn't be very good for his tummy!! Before we left, I hand expressed milk and no blood. Totally looked over my breast and no abrasions, nothing. Not even a possible hickey from the little guy. And of course I had on a black tank top so we're not likely to see blood if there IS any on it. To Valley Care Hospital we go.
We check in, the nurse sees the blood on my shirt and he even spit up a tiny bit more while being looked over. The doctor came to look at him and said that since its red blood, its much more likely mine than his. And it also, since its red, it never even made it to his stomach entirely. Bowel movements have all been normal, no coughing; so mom likely has a burst/ruptured milk duct in her breast. Sweet ... He said it was likely that he may spit up a bit more blood but to keep an eye on him. If he spits up a good amount more than one more time to go back. And for me to pump next couple of times just to check things out for me. But honestly ... more than likely ... we're both ok.
Phew ................... Downside ... a high deductible health plan means that we'll likely have to cover the full cost of the ER visit. My guess, somewhere in the arena of $1000 to $1500. Oh well ... better safe than sorry. No more ER trips for the Civello family ....
The doc also mentioned that if he didn't spit up more it was likely he'd poop out the rest and the stool would be black. Morning diapers ... black. So hopefully all the blood is out of his tummy. And he slept soundly. He drooled a bit of brown drool last night but other than that is just fine. But still his normal sunny disposition. :) Hopefully it's all out of his system soon.
PS ... they took his temp rectally and I was like oh man ... he's NOT going to like that. Ummm my little man is seriously a doctors dream. He didn't even flinch. We told the doc that with his heel pricks and first sets of innaculations he's just grunted in annoyance at it all. The doctor was playing with him and told him ... you better keep this up little man ... you're a great little boy. Don't we know it!!!
